Hoping you can help settle a dispute. I was having dinner last night with a group of retired teachers, and we were debating a question (or rather an answer) that appeared on an episode of "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?"

The issue is this: How many plural pronouns are in the following sentence?

"Sierra and Cody told us that their grades were better than ours but we didn't believe them."

The contestant lost the game. The correct answer, according to the show, is 5. Our posse seems to believe that there are only 4 pronouns, that "their" is actually a possessive adjective.

Would you be willing to comment on the subject?
