They are both correct. Both "was" and "were" have been used interchangeably in counterfactuals for 200 years. See The American Heritage Book of English Usage, The Columbia Guide to Standard American English, and Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage.
'were' is correct according to queen's English
